„GATE“ – literární soutěž v anglickém jazyce

Ve středu 2. června 2010 uspořádalo jazykové a vzdělávací centrum Pygmalion v Ostravě již sedmý ročník oblíbené soutěže Gate pro studenty třetích ročníků středních škol s cílem nejen zvýšit motivaci ke studiu anglického jazyka, ale také podpořít zájem studentů o četbu literatury v cizím jazyce.

Naše škola se soutěže letos zůčastnila poprvé a hned s velkým zájmem a úspěchem! 12 studentů ve školním kole napsalo krátký test založený na slovní zásobě a faktech obsažených v knize. Dva nejlepší z naší školy pak v Pygmalionu nejprve písemně rozvedli své čtenářské zážitky v několika slohových útvarech a pak měli možnost projevit svou obratnost v mluveném jazyce při rozhovoru se členy poroty.

Knihou, kterou pořadatelé vybrali pro tento rok, byl román Charlese Dickense s názvem Nadějné vyhlídky (Great Expectations), což je stěžejní dílo anglického realismu devatenáctého století a vlastně i světové literatury jako takové. Jedná se o poutavý příběh chudého chlapce Pipa, jehož životním cílem je, stát se bohatým a váženým člověkem.

Tomáš Bartoněk ze VIIA obsadil vynikající druhé místo a Veronika Gižová ze VIIB skončila třetí. Výhercům blahopřejeme a těšíme se na další, doufejme neméně uspěšné ročníky této inspirativní soutěže!

Pro vítěze byly připraveny atraktivní ceny v podobě oxfordských slovníků, které se budou jistě hodit při budoucím studiu a četbě dalších knih v angličtině.

Reading makes students more advanced users of English language

On 20th May 2010 a voluntary group of third grade and septima’s students took part in a literary competition called “GATE” in English language in our school.

An important part of language learning is knowing how to adopt the reader role, and therefore the purpose of this competition is to encourage students of English to develop a sensitivity to the language through an appreciation of the literature. Our intention is to stimulate students to read in English and awaken their interest in English-speaking countries.

12 students participated and completed a written test after reading the book by Charles Dickens – Great Expectations. The test consisted of several tasks (matching the names with descriptions, circling the correct answer who said this or what happened in the story and using words from the book in the sentences).
Despite the fact that the following participants reached the highest score, only two of them became eligible to compete in the regional round:

We would like to thank all the students for their participation and congratulate the winners: Tomáš Bartoněk won second place and Veronika Gižová third place in the regional round!

Their first task was to write how far they agree with the main idea of the book – and „is it good to have great expectations“? They also wrote a letter to Estella and a review of the book saying what they liked or disliked about it.
